ANNOUNCEMENT – BPW NZ has a new President!

At Conference 2011 on 2nd April 2011, Carolyn Savage became president of BPW NZ.

Carolyn is a Registered Architect with the drive and commitment for sustainable and green/environmental architecture. She is registered with the USA Energy Star association and is a qualified Australasian Green Star Accredited Professional. Carolyn’s family – husband Irvine and son Alexander make a great support team for all that Carolyn commits to.

Carolyn joined BPW Franklyn In 2004 holding various committee posts since 2005. At her first national BPW Conference in 2008, she became the new Marketing Convenor. Carolyn was one of the driving forces behind the Roadshow and the 70th Birthday celebrations – a task which gave Carolyn a great insight into the achievements of many BPW leaders both past and present who are worthy of emulation!

As an alternative delegate to Congress in Mexico City, the importance of the work which begins in the BPW clubs, goes up through the channels of BPW NZ via conference and then to BPW International and the United Nations was reinforced and confirmed. Carolyn is committed to tackling key issues on behalf of the membership.

“STOP PRESS!!!!
When I went to the post box this morning, I had received no less than 12 worksheets from Te Awamutu for their members’ Bronze Key levels for KTA.

This is just amazing, and if any other clubs are inspired by this, I am happy to receive their worksheets right up until Wed 30 March.

Congratulations, Te Awamutu and those members who have achieved Bronze.”

Farewell Message from Ann Desmond

Q:         Is 3 years too long or too short?  This is a question I, and others before me must have asked as the end of a term in office approaches.

A:         Both! From my perspective 3 years is too short as I haven’t achieved everything that I set out to do.  For a whole load of reasons, things didn’t move as fast as predicted at the outset – particularly in this last year.  On the other hand, 3 years is also too long as by the 3rd year, I was beginning to feel that it was time for some new blood / a new outlook.

Regardless of the answer, I want to thank everyone for being so supportive over the past 3 years.  I have enjoyed being Technology Convenor even if there have been moments of frustration!  I am really pleased that Technology will be in the capable hands of Lorraine Cameron from Tamaki. Welcome Lorraine.

Lena Madesin Phillips

Our founder, Lena Madesin Phillips was born in Nicholasville, south of Lexington,    Kentucky. Dr. Phillips died during a trip to Europe in 1955. She was born in 1881. The inscription on her tombstone reads:

A NEW COMMANDMENT I GIVE UNTO YOU THAT YE LOVE ONE ANOTHER

What a member must do ;

“Individuals who are without office, chairmanship, or other special responsibility usually underestimate their importance to the club’s programme network. Too often each considers her part done by the payment of dues and a single appearance upon the programme. She feels free to attend meetings or to stay at home, to come late and leave early, to complain, criticise and behave generally like a disinterested onlooker. Such an attitude reveals a dangerous misconception. The members of any club are the most important and should be the most vital part. To express their will, to do their bidding, all else exists. Without their interest, comprehension, forceful activity, the organisation is but an empty shell.”
