BPW Hawera celebrates 25 year anniversary
On Saturday the 7th of May, 2011, Business and Professional Women, Hawera celebrate their 25th anniversary.
Thirty-five women met on the 5th of May 1986 and resolved to form BPW Hawera. An application for affiliation was made to the New Zealand Federation of Business and Professional Women.
Mention was made that although the club was to be known as BPW Hawera, the intent was to include all women within the South Taranaki district. This also showed in the election of the interim officers of the executive in that meeting with Diana O’Brian from Manaia as president, Barbara Taylor from Kaponga as Vice-President, Joane McMurtrie from Hawera as secretary and Joan Bouzaid from Hawera as treasurer. Other committee members were Ruth Hicks, Judith Serich, Maureen Counsell, Sandra Stent and Judy Young. BPW Hawera’s life member Heather Roberts-Thomson has also been involved in BPW Hawera since that very first meeting in May 1986.
The aims and objectives laid out in that first meeting are still applicable today. BPW develops the professional, leadership and business potential of women on all levels through advocacy, mentoring, networking, skill building and our economic empowerment programs and projects around the world.
The very first year of the club’s existence, amongst other activities, the club organised a “Meet the Candidates” night around the local body elections. This is an activity that BPW Hawera has repeated ever since, now including the 2010 general elections.
Guest speakers are an important part of the BPW meetings. Margaret Smith, mayor of Eltham was the first guest speaker at the very first meeting on the 26th of May 1986 (see attached news clipping published in the Daily News in May 1986).
Nowadays BPW Hawera meets every 3rd Monday of the month at the Tairoa Lodge Church Hall. Some of the more recent activities include several high profile guest speakers; involvement in the Family Challenge day and the Hawera club expo; organisation of the BPW regional conference; open breakfast meetings in support of white ribbon day, international women’s day and international leadership week and participation in BPW’s international Keys To Achievement program.
All current and old members are invited to join the celebration on Saturday the 7th of May for an afternoon of drinks and nibbles, catching up with old friends and listening to stories from when it all started to the way BPW operates in 2011 as well as an interesting and entertaining guest speaker.
Old members can email their contact details to BPW.Hawera@gmail.com to receive an invitation for the celebration. Please include your name and the period that you were a member of BPW Hawera.
