3rd DEGREE CURRENT AFFAIRS PROGRAMME
The practice of Dowry and the abuse that precedes and follows the marriage of women and young women has increased in numbers and severity in New Zealand. Shakti is currently dealing with one of the most severe cases in recent times — that of a 28 year old brought to New Zealand on a culturally arranged marriage. Within weeks, the abuse graduated from financial and psychological to the physical. September last, she was forced to swallow drain cleaner sustaining horrific injuries that have left her with a tracheotomy, breathing pipes and feeding tubes. She can neither speak, nor eat nor swallow. Her doctors in New Zealand have declared that they do not have the expertise to operate on her. While her perpetrator walks free, she has been confined to a life of dependence and surgeries. But all is not lost.
This is a story of courage and defiance against all odds…
